Network & Server Power Protection · British Virgin Islands

Network and server power protection uses rack-mount uninterruptible power supplies, monitoring and automated shutdown to keep comms room equipment — servers, switches, firewalls and internet equipment — running safely through power disturbances.

A comms room is usually the single point of failure for an entire office: if the server or the switch loses power ungracefully, every user is affected at once, so this is where power protection investment matters most.

Rack-mount UPS for comms rooms

Rack-mount UPS units sit alongside servers and network switches in the same cabinet, sized to the combined load of everything they protect: servers, switches, firewalls, patch panel active equipment and, where relevant, the internet router and modem. Protecting the server but not the switch or router still leaves the office offline during an outage.

Setting a runtime target

  • Enough runtime to bridge a generator start, typically a few minutes, where a standby generator is in place.
  • Longer runtime, calculated against actual load, where no generator exists and equipment must run through short outages entirely on battery.
  • A minimum runtime that allows automated, graceful shutdown of servers before batteries are exhausted, protecting against data corruption.

Graceful shutdown and cooling dependency

UPS management software triggers an orderly shutdown sequence when battery runtime drops below a safe threshold — closing applications and databases cleanly before power is lost, rather than allowing an abrupt cut. This is configured once and then runs automatically regardless of who is on site at the time.

Comms room cooling is a dependency that is easy to overlook: if air conditioning loses power before the UPS-protected equipment does, or is not itself protected, servers can overheat during an otherwise successful UPS-bridged outage. Where a comms room has dedicated cooling, it needs to be part of the same protection and monitoring plan.

Monitoring

Rack-mount UPS units report battery health, load and mains status to central monitoring. Fresh Mango's managed IT services integrate this into the same monitoring used for servers and network equipment, so a failing battery or an overloaded UPS is flagged and addressed before it becomes an outage.

When should a business use this?

Single-server office

Protect the server, switch and router on one rack-mount UPS sized to combined load.

Multi-rack comms room

Distribute UPS capacity across racks with monitoring aggregated centrally.

Office with a standby generator

Size UPS runtime to bridge the generator start reliably, then hand off.

Remote or unmanned site

Automated shutdown and remote alerting substitute for someone being on site during an outage.

Best practices we recommend

  • Include switches, firewalls and routers in UPS sizing, not just the server.
  • Set graceful shutdown thresholds with margin, not right up to the battery's rated limit.
  • Include comms room cooling in the same protection and monitoring plan as the equipment it cools.
  • Test UPS runtime under real load periodically rather than trusting the nameplate rating indefinitely.
  • Feed UPS alerts into the same monitoring used for server and network health.

Frequently asked questions

What should be plugged into the server room UPS?

Everything needed to keep the office connected during an outage: the server, network switches, firewall, and the internet router or modem. Protecting only the server while the switch loses power still leaves every user offline.

How is UPS runtime calculated for a server room?

Runtime is calculated from the combined wattage of everything connected and the battery capacity of the UPS, then checked against how long the business actually needs to bridge — typically a generator start time, or long enough for an automated shutdown to complete safely.

What happens if the UPS runs out of battery before staff can act?

With automated shutdown configured, servers close applications and shut down cleanly on their own before the battery is exhausted, without anyone needing to be present. Without it, an abrupt loss of power risks data corruption and a longer recovery when power returns.

Does the air conditioning in our comms room need power protection too?

If cooling fails before UPS-protected equipment does, servers can overheat during what would otherwise be a successful outage. Dedicated comms room cooling should be included in the same power protection and monitoring plan as the equipment it serves.

Even in locations with an excellent track record of clean utility power, it is still prudent to have a UPS to provide backup power, Network Protection and Server Protection for your servers. Even a single 'dirty shutdown' of key systems can cause catastrophic data corruption, resulting in many hours of downtime and potential permanent data loss. For environments with regular power disruptions or mission-critical servers, we recommend going a step further and ensuring that you have a UPS unit that provides Double Conversion protection to provide separation between your equipment and the utility power.
