Fresh Mango have put together some ideas, recommendations and considerations for IT outsourcing and outsourced IT support.
IT Outsourcing · British Virgin Islands
IT outsourcing is the practice of contracting an external specialist to deliver some or all of an organisation's technology functions — support, infrastructure, security, cloud administration or projects — instead of employing that capability internally.
Outsourcing is a decision about where capability and accountability sit, not simply a way to cut cost. Done well it buys breadth, continuity and specialist depth that most British Virgin Islands businesses cannot recruit locally.
How IT outsourcing works
The starting point is deciding what to outsource. Full outsourcing hands the entire IT function to a provider. Selective outsourcing keeps strategy and vendor relationships in-house while delegating support, monitoring, cyber security or cloud administration. Project outsourcing brings in specialists for defined work such as a Microsoft 365 migration or network rebuild.
Whichever model you choose, the mechanics are the same: document the current environment, agree services and service levels, transfer knowledge and administrative access on your terms, then govern the relationship through regular reporting and review.
Offshore, nearshore and local delivery
Offshore delivery can reduce cost but adds time-zone, language and site-visit constraints. For BVI businesses the practical answer is usually hybrid: local engineers for anything physical and relationship-based, remote specialists for out-of-hours monitoring and deep technical work.
What should not be outsourced
Ownership of your data, your Microsoft 365 tenant, your domain names and your administrative accounts should always stay with the business. So should accountability for risk decisions — a provider advises, the business decides.
Who outsourcing suits
Businesses that cannot recruit or retain the range of skills they need on-island.
Organisations wanting predictable operating cost instead of variable headcount cost.
Firms with compliance obligations requiring documented controls and evidence.
Companies whose internal team is consumed by day-to-day support and never reaches improvement work.
Benefits and trade-offs
Access to breadth: networking, Microsoft 365, cyber security and hardware skills from one team.
Continuity through holidays, sickness and staff turnover.
Predictable monthly cost and planned capital investment.
Trade-off: you must invest in governance — a contract, service levels, reporting and a named internal owner.
Trade-off: a poorly documented handover creates dependency; insist on documentation you own.
How Fresh Mango helps
Fresh Mango Technologies has delivered outsourced IT to British Virgin Islands organisations since 2008, from selective support arrangements to full IT function outsourcing, with local engineers on Tortola and remote specialists for Microsoft 365, networks and security.
We will also give an honest view when outsourcing is the wrong answer — for example, when the real problem is unclear internal ownership rather than a lack of technical capacity.

Best practices we recommend
Define the outcomes you want before asking providers how they would deliver them.
Keep ownership of data, tenants, domains and administrator accounts with your business.
Write service levels, reporting and exit terms into the contract.
Name an internal owner of the relationship, even in full outsourcing.
Review quarterly against business objectives, not just ticket statistics.
Frequently asked questions
Is outsourcing IT cheaper than hiring?
Often, but cost should not be the deciding factor. Outsourcing usually wins on breadth of skills and continuity of cover; a single internal hire cannot cover networking, Microsoft 365, cyber security and hardware, nor provide cover during absence. Compare total cost including salary, benefits, training, tooling and recruitment.
Will we lose control of our IT?
Not if the contract is right. Your business should own its data, Microsoft 365 tenant, domain names and administrator accounts, and retain final decision-making. A good provider increases control by documenting an environment that was previously undocumented.
What can realistically be outsourced?
User support, monitoring and patching, Microsoft 365 administration, backup and disaster recovery, network and firewall management, cyber security operations, procurement and project delivery. Strategy and risk ownership stay with the business, informed by the provider's advice.
How long should an outsourcing contract run?
Twelve months is common, with a clear notice period and documented exit terms. Longer terms should buy something concrete — investment in your environment, better rates or committed project work.
What are the risks?
Poor documentation creating dependency, vague scope leading to disputes, weak reporting hiding problems, and providers who also sell hardware pushing unnecessary purchases. All four are manageable with written scope, client-owned accounts and regular review.
Are you considering IT outsourcing for your IT support?
Perhaps you already have outsourced IT support and are not satisfied with the service?
Maybe you have in-house IT support and you’re considering a change?
Or it could be that you don’t have any IT support and you or your staff have been managing it yourself.
If any of these sound like you, then read on! Fresh Mango have put together some ideas, recommendations and considerations for IT outsourcing. They are not intended to be exhaustive, rather they provide a useful starting-point and reference for your considerations.

At Fresh Mango, we ask our customers to consider numerous factors. These are three of the considerations when deciding on outsourced IT support:
When was the last time your IT infrastructure was reviewed/overhauled? If it’s been more than 2 years you should at least have a review of systems for integrity, security and optimal performance
How big is your business, ie how many staff use IT equipment (note the expression – it’s not just PCs, but laptops, tablets, smartphones, POS, handheld devices etc as well).
How will you work with your IT outsourcing partner? The keyword here is ‘partner’. The CCS approach is that we become your IT department, just not co-located with you.
Fresh Mango have a lot of recommendations! Here are three:
Your chosen provider will have access-all-areas to your IT and business. Implicit trust is needed. Be sure you’re confident in your potential partner’s absolute discretion and integrity
Do you need 9-5 support or extended hours support? Many owner-operated businesses, and indeed business directors, sometimes require evening and weekend support. Fresh Mango can provide early morning support from our sister company in the UK.
Does the outsourced IT support provider wait for you to raise an issue? Or are they proactively managing your IT systems to maximise your operational efficiency and minimise your IT problems?
What is their cybersecurity calibre? The advent of continuous cyber-attacks – on businesses small and large – means that you need a lot, lot more than anti-virus software in place.
