Why leaving PCs on supports maintenance, not just convenience

Most managed patch cycles, antivirus updates and scheduled backup jobs run outside office hours specifically because that avoids disrupting daily work. If a PC is switched off overnight, it misses that window entirely, and updates queue up until the device happens to be on long enough to run them — which often means they never run reliably at all.

There is also a common but incorrect belief that switching off every day extends hardware life; modern business PCs are designed for continuous or near-continuous operation, and the wear from frequent power cycling is not meaningfully lower than the wear from staying on.

When switching off does make sense

Extended absence, such as a holiday closure of more than a few days.
A specific instruction from your IT provider ahead of planned maintenance.
