Server Health Checks · Fresh Mango Technologies

A server health check is a technical audit of the systems your business depends on — physical and virtual servers, storage, backups, network services and power protection — producing a documented risk assessment and remediation plan.

What is inspected

  • Hardware status: disks, RAID arrays, controllers, memory, power supplies and firmware levels.
  • Operating system support status, patch level and pending reboots.
  • Virtualisation health, resource contention, snapshots and capacity headroom.
  • Backup configuration, last successful job, retention and — critically — evidence of a tested restore.
  • Disaster recovery readiness against documented recovery time and recovery point objectives.
  • Security configuration: administrative accounts, remote access exposure, logging and endpoint protection.
  • Environment: rack cooling, ventilation, UPS battery condition and runtime, generator arrangements.
  • Capacity trends and realistic remaining service life.

How it works

We collect configuration and log data remotely, then inspect the physical environment where servers are on-premises. Findings are rated by business impact and likelihood, and presented as a short report a non-technical director can act on, with a technical appendix for engineers.

Where a server is genuinely no longer needed, the report will say so — many workloads still running on ageing hardware in the British Virgin Islands belong in Microsoft 365, SharePoint or Microsoft Azure instead.

Who needs one

  • Businesses still running on-premises servers, particularly any over four years old.
  • Organisations that have never tested a full restore.
  • Firms considering a move to Microsoft Azure or Microsoft 365 and needing a factual starting position.
  • Boards and auditors requiring documented evidence of infrastructure risk and continuity readiness.

Problems it solves

  • Silent backup failure — the single most common finding, and the most damaging.
  • Undetected disk or array degradation heading towards total loss.
  • Unsupported server operating systems with no security updates.
  • UPS batteries that will not survive the first outage of hurricane season.
  • Servers maintained at cost for workloads that could run more safely in the cloud.

How Fresh Mango helps

Fresh Mango Technologies has assessed and maintained server infrastructure across the British Virgin Islands since 2008, including Windows Server environments, virtualisation, storage, offshore and cloud backup, power protection and Microsoft Azure migration. Caribbean realities — power quality, humidity, shipping times for replacement parts and hurricane preparation — are built into every recommendation.

Best practices we recommend

  • Test a full restore at least annually and document the result; an untested backup is an assumption.
  • Keep server firmware, hypervisor and operating system patching on a scheduled cycle with a maintenance window.
  • Hold spares or a support contract for critical components, allowing for BVI shipping times.
  • Replace UPS batteries on a planned three-to-four-year cycle and load-test them.
  • Reassess annually whether each remaining workload still needs to be on-premises.

Frequently asked questions

How often should servers be health checked?

At least annually as a formal audit, alongside continuous monitoring. Any server over four years old, or any environment that has never had a tested restore, should be checked sooner.

What is the most common serious finding?

Backups that appear to succeed but cannot restore — because a data source was added and never included, retention was too short, or nobody had ever attempted a restore. It is also the finding with the highest potential business impact.

Should we replace our server or move to the cloud?

It depends on the workload. File storage, email and collaboration almost always belong in Microsoft 365, SharePoint and OneDrive. Line-of-business applications with local dependencies may suit Microsoft Azure or a replacement server. A health check gives you the facts to decide rather than a vendor preference.

Do you check power protection as part of this?

Yes. UPS condition, runtime, load and generator arrangements are assessed, because in the British Virgin Islands power quality is a leading cause of hardware failure and data corruption.

Server health checks are essential for the smooth and secure operation of your server and network. In the same way that your car requires regular maintenance, so too does your computer server. You conduct regular maintenance on your car to protect your investment and to minimise the chances of it breaking down. It’s exactly the same principle for your computer server. You made a significant business investment and so it makes perfect sense to ensure it lasts and performs well for its service life. Plus, no maintenance means more problems and failures, which means lost productivity and costs to your business. So, server health checks make perfect sense. We conduct them regularly for our Managed Service Provision (MSP) customers as part of our complete IT support arrangements for them. We also provide server health checks to customers who do not wish to commit to an MSP arrangement. These can be one-off, weekly, fortnightly, monthly or quarterly.
