Surge Protection · Fresh Mango Technologies

Surge protection is the set of devices and wiring practices that intercept short, high-voltage transients — from lightning, utility switching and generator changeover — before they reach and damage computers, servers and network equipment.

The British Virgin Islands sees frequent lightning activity, particularly during hurricane season, and overhead power distribution across the territory means transients from a strike some distance away can still travel into a building's wiring.

Where transients come from

  • Direct or nearby lightning strikes inducing voltage spikes on power and telephone lines.
  • Utility switching, including reconnection after an outage and generator changeover.
  • Motors and compressors — air conditioning units, pumps, lifts — switching on and off elsewhere in the same building or grid.
  • Internal wiring faults or loose connections generating smaller, repeated transients that shorten equipment life without an obvious single event.

Layers of surge protection

Effective surge protection is layered rather than a single device. A primary suppressor at the main incoming supply or distribution board absorbs the bulk of large transients. Secondary protection at UPS units and individual equipment sockets catches what the primary layer does not fully absorb. Each layer reduces the energy reaching the next, so equipment sees a progressively smaller and safer transient.

This layered approach matters because a single device, however well specified, has a maximum energy rating; once exceeded or after repeated smaller surges, it degrades. Layering shares the load and gives redundancy if one stage is compromised.

Protecting data and network lines

Surges do not only travel through power cabling. Telephone lines, network cabling that runs any distance outdoors or near power infrastructure, and satellite or fibre terminations can all carry induced transients into networking equipment. Data line surge protectors are fitted where these cables enter a building or comms room, working alongside power-side protection rather than instead of it.

What a surge strip does and does not do

A basic plug-in surge strip provides a modest, single layer of protection and no runtime during a power outage. It degrades with each surge it absorbs, often silently, so a strip that protected equipment during one storm may offer little protection during the next. It also does nothing for sags, brownouts or short outages, which is why surge protection and a UPS are complementary rather than alternatives.

When should a business use this?

New office electrical fit-out

Specify surge protection at the distribution board as part of the electrical design, not as an afterthought.

Comms room with external cabling runs

Protect network and telephone lines entering the building alongside power-side protection.

Post-storm equipment audit

Check and replace degraded surge devices after a lightning-active storm season.

Retail or hospitality with point-of-sale equipment

Protect payment terminals and networking equipment that cannot tolerate downtime during peak trading.

Best practices we recommend

  • Fit primary surge protection at the main incoming electrical supply, not only at individual sockets.
  • Protect network and telephone lines at building entry points, not only power circuits.
  • Replace surge protection devices after any significant strike, since degradation is not usually visible.
  • Confirm building earthing is adequate; surge protection depends on it.
  • Pair surge protection with UPS units so sags, brownouts and outages are also covered.

Frequently asked questions

Is surge protection the same as a UPS?

No. Surge protection absorbs short, high-voltage transients such as those from lightning or switching events. A UPS additionally provides runtime during a power sag or outage and typically includes its own surge protection stage. Business-critical equipment needs both, working together rather than as alternatives.

Can lightning damage equipment even if it doesn't strike our building?

Yes. A strike anywhere on the overhead network feeding a building, or even nearby ground, can induce a damaging transient onto power or telephone lines that then travels into connected equipment. This is one of the most common causes of unexplained equipment failure after a storm.

How do I know if my surge protector still works?

Most plug-in surge strips give no reliable ongoing indication once degraded; the safest approach is scheduled replacement, particularly after any significant lightning activity, rather than relying on the device to signal failure.

Do network cables need surge protection too?

Any network, telephone or data cable that runs outdoors, over any distance, or near power infrastructure can carry an induced surge into connected equipment. Data line surge protectors fitted where these cables enter a building or comms room close this gap.

Where should surge protection be installed?

Ideally at three points: the main incoming electrical supply or distribution board, at the UPS protecting servers and network equipment, and at individual sockets for sensitive peripherals. Skipping the first stage leaves the largest transients to be absorbed entirely by downstream devices.

BVI surge protection for your home and office is a must-have in any environment but is particularly critical in locations where the electricity supply is regularly affected by surges, outages and natural phenomena (storms, lightning, etc).

From Plasma TV’s and HD DVD Players to surround sound systems and advanced gaming, today’s homes contain more electronics than ever. With this automation comes an increased vulnerability to the effects of surges. Similarly offices, with servers and computers connected to power 24/7, are hugely vulnerable. Fresh Mango Technologies can provide two-level BVI surge protection for you entire home or office at very affordable prices.

Power Surges

One lightning storm could cause thousands, even tens of thousands, of dollars worth of damage to the electronics in a home or office. Once a power surge enters and damages the electronic components, the owner is forced to embark on a time-consuming and frustrating journey which includes:
  • Diagnose all of the issues
  • Attempt to find all locations of damage
  • Determine if your equipment is under warranty
  • Locate replacement products
  • Contact numerous service departments
We can help protect against such damage with a comprehensive approach to surge protection. Eaton’s surge suppression products offer the homeowner a complete approach, by offering both Stage I and Stage II surge protection.

Stage 1 Protection

The process starts of by installing a surge protector at the point of entry in to the building to protect the entire electrical wiring system from the biggest surges and spikes, despite this blanket protection these units are relatively inexpensive. Service Entrance Protection is designed to provide premier surge protection for AC power, telephone and cable at the point of entrance to the home. Protection at this location can reduce surges to an acceptable level for surge strips to handle at the point of use.

Stage 2 Protection

With Stage 1 protection installed, we then recommend protecting individual appliances from the smaller surges the main unit doesn't filter with units from the wide range of protection units available, from multi socket power strips to discreet single plug units. Point of use surge strips are designed to offer premier surge protection for specific electronics while providing innovative features to enhance user convenience safety. Eaton’s Complete Home Surge Protection Type 2 Devices (CHSPT2 Series) protect your home electronics from the damaging effects of electrical surges. They provide premium surge protection for AC power, telephone and cable at the point of entrance to the home. Protection at this location can reduce surges entering the home to an acceptable level for your home electronics and appliances.
