What is a UPS?

A UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply or Uninterruptible Power Source) continues to provide power to computers and equipment in the event of a power failure (outage, surge or brownout).

Types of UPS Protection

Stand By

Standy UPS units provide battery back up in the event of a power failure and will generally include surge protection. They differ from Line Interactive units in that they do not provide voltage correction (so in the event of a nominal power dip/peak they will switch to battery rather than correcting the voltage).

Line Interactive

Line Interactive UPS units provide not only a battery backup in the event of a power failure but also the ability to correct under and over voltages from the utility company "on the fly", in a poor power environment this means the unit doesn't switch to the battery unless it needs to (extreme under/over-voltage or total power loss). This in turn leads to a better standby unit and longer battery life.

Online / Double Conversion

Double Conversion UPS units provide battery back up and the ability to correct voltages (as with Line Interactive units) but equipment connected to them is never directly connected to the utility power, providing a level of isolation suitable for delicate equipment or environments with particularly poor power. This is effectively an electrical 'firewall' between your equipment and the utility power.

Pure Sinewave Output

UPS units that provide a 'pure sinewave' output when running on battery power are producing a quality of power as close to 'perfect utility power' as possible. In technical terms, mains power electricity is AC (alternating current) and this alternation in current isn't a simple switching of polarity - it is a smooth increase/decrease past 'zero'. Pure Sinewave output is recommended for delicate, expensive and/or mission critical equipment.
